When I am faced with a patient who needs an antibiotic, and there is an alternative antibiotic with similar efficacy and lower QT risk, I will choose the antibiotic with lower QT risk, and I’m especially careful with patients with certain characteristics that put them at increased risk.

Popular Antidepressants May Prolong QT Interval

In August 2011 the FDA issued a safety communication recommending that the extremely popular antidepressant citalopram (Celexa) not be used at doses greater than 40 mg/day because of a potential increased risk for serious cardiac arrhythmias associated with prolongation of the QT interval.
